Elisa Wirthlin was the wife of Joseph B. Wirthlin who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from 1986 until his death in 2008. Elder Wirthlin also served as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy from 1976-1986, and was in the Presidency of the Seventy for only two months before being called as an Apostle. Plans for the David O. McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program.
